Bosque Del Apache

Conditions at Bosque Del Apache were a disappointment this year. Fortunately the Crane Pools, which had been drained in 2006, had been refilled for 2007, as conditions in the main refuge were poor. Between the main pool being nearly devoid of water, very little corn in the fields for the Geese and Cranes and large stands of uncut grass obstructed the view of the already sparse birds in the fields. Good images were to be had, but primarily at the Crane Pools and with a lot more effort than in years past. To top it off I ended up in the hospital. Fortunately my son Brian was along and ably finished the tour without my assistance. I’ve decided not to include a Bosque tour in 2008 as it’s likely the Crane Pools won’t be filled and if the conditions in the main refuge haven’t improved, it simply isn’t worth the trip. A shame, this was the premier bird photography location in the Country.
